Chapter 9

"Hi... I'm Rae. Is Blake or James around?" she asked the old lady on the porch. She studied Rae with curious eyes.

The woman smiled at her, then she yelled something in a language that Rae didn't understand and went back to chopping veggies, ignoring her completely. Rae didn't know what to make of the old lady, and she felt a bit awkward staying there with only a sheet wrapped around her body. The old lady remained unphased though and went about her work like Rae wasn't even there. She took a look around and saw that the house she was currently occupying was one of the five houses that were built in a clearing. They all looked like small, A-shaped log cabins with a small porch and were placed in a semicircle. Somewhere in the middle, there was a suspended cauldron above a fire, and there was steam coming up. The old lady took the bowl of veggies to the makeshift kitchen and remained close to the cauldron stirring. Then Blake approached from behind one of the log cabins. He came to a halt as soon as he laid eyes on her.

"Doc will be with you in a minute. Stay put!" he shouted towards her, then ran back where he came from.

"Some clothes would be nice!" she shouted back, though he seemed to have vanished and might not have heard that.

There was no response, and Rae sighed in frustration. She was still confused about the previous night. She liked Blake from the moment she met him not only because he was attractive but also because he was funny and made her feel safe. That was until last night.

She was getting more uncomfortable by the minute, so she turned around and headed back for the bed. Rae paused for a moment in the doorway and looked around. Downstairs, there was a big room with a fireplace and scarce furniture, just a table, and a few chairs, and a cupboard holding some bowls and cups, maybe cutlery too. Actually, the room wasn't that big at all, it just appeared that way because it lacked furniture. Rae thought it was odd having no furniture. Maybe, no one actually lived in this particular cabin. A vague memory of Blake stating she was in his bed came to mind but Rae quickly dismissed it.

Then, some stairs led to the loft bedroom upstairs. Holding tight onto her sheet, Rae started to climb the stairs. On her way up, due to the length of the sheet, she managed to step on it, lost her balance and fell on her back. It all happened so fast that she didn't have time to turn around and break the fall with her hand. A shriek left her mouth, realizing she was going to hit her head on the stairs. Rae closed her eyes and clenched her jaw bracing for the impact. But it never happened. Instead, two strong arms caught her shoulders when she was inches from the steps.

Rae opened her eyes immediately in shock.
